primer dia

¡Hola amigos!

ciao,
Celia, la viajadora independiente...casi

Hi all!
It´s incredible that i´ve only been in Peru 24 hours...it feels like weeks of experiences and emotions. First, a little background for those who don´t know my situation: I arrived in cusco 4 days before my study abroad program starts. I´´m going to be with my program (which is called SIT World Learning)until May 15 and then i´m going to intern with a cultural center of folklore.I´ll return to the US in August to finish my final year at Connecticut College. This is my first time in a latin american country, but i like it already!
This is a very difficult time here: Many of the surrounding towns are flooded and cut off from travel due to excessive rains, and thousands of people don´t have houses, food or any of life´s necessities. I am very lucky to be in a safe place, and for the many people here who have helped me.
My first day (the day before yesterday) was difficult. I explored Cusco by myself: It´s a beautiful city, tucked in the mountains with cobblestone streets and old buildings. I had great conversations with the indigenous ladies spinning and weaving in the plaza and with a lady who tried to sell me her paintings. But when i returned to the hostal i felt how lonely it is to be alone in a foreign country. I napped a little and then, when i asked where to get a good cup of tea, the boss-lady prepared some for me. I admit, i cried a little when i showed her my pictures of home, but i recovered quickly. I met up with Nicolas (a friend of the Meades), his partner Sandra and their baby Oropheo. they introduced me to friends in the market and stores and restaurants that are less touristy (so much cheaper). I returned to the hostel, this time lifted by friendship and a warm tamale. The soccer ball in my throat is much smaller now, the sun is bright and there´s much to do!
much love,
Celia

Amazing that you are in Peru, and obviously speaking the local lingo very well. Good luck with your studies and in getting to know your new surroundings.
